Taking A Look At The 2019 Centenary Championships

What better way to ring in the new year then to participate in one of the first disc golf tournaments of 2019 in South Australia – the Centenary Championships. Held at the beautiful Crater Lakes Disc Golf Park in Mount Gambier, 45 players attended to see who would take home the bragging rights from this amazing layout.

The competitors in attendance were fairly evenly split when it comes to how far they traveled, with roughly half from SA itself and the other half making the trek from Victoria. Although this three-round event had some wind to deal with, it didn’t stop a course record of -9 from being put up on the scorecard by MPO winner, Geelong’s Dylan Feldman. Let’s take a closer look at the action and learn a little more about disc golf!

Disc Golf Down Under

The disc golf scene in South Australia is alive and well with a healthy representation of players attending this tournament and bringing a variety of skill levels to the course. From professional players to junior competitors, the spirit of the sport and the camaraderie it brings was palpable. The Centenary Championships started on Friday with an afternoon round that no doubt got everyone warmed up and excited for the weekend ahead.

Dinner at The Gambier Hotel allowed everyone the chance to mingle and get to know each other better as well as provided an opportunity for the competition to really size each other up! Saturday was the big day where anything could happen, and after two rounds that day at Crater Lakes, it was clear that the event was loved by all.

The event was packed with 9 age and skill based divisions. The were some close battles on the weekend, including Men’s Intermediate whereby Geelong’s Noah Terpstra clinched the title by only one stroke. Tim Bohan also had a narrow victory in Men’s Advanced, with a 3 stroke win over fellow Inverleigh Disc Golf member, Luke Feldman. Tim’s wife Kat Bohan, made it a double for the Bohan’s with her convincing win in Women’s Novice. A great achievement considering her short time in the sport.

The winners of each division were:

Intermediate (MA2) – Noah Terpstra

Novice Women (FA4) – Kat Bohan

Advanced (MA1) – Tim Bohan

Pro Open – Dylan Feldman

Pro Open Women – Toosje Frequin

Amateur Master 40+ (MM1) – Scott Baker

Amateur Master 50+ (MG1) – Hank Terpstra

Novice (MA4) – Gareth Morgan

Junior (MJ2) – Reuben Feldman
